On Tuesday last another old settler was laid away in his last resting place. It was Mr. August Gutzka, of Canoe Township, who was born in Kitzbinau, Germany, Sept. 29, 1818.

In 1843 he was married to Miss Henrietta Straus, but after twenty-one years of wedded life she was taken from him by death. In 1864 he was again married, Miss Mina Helwig becoming his wife. They emigrated to Canada and two years later came to Canoe Township, in this country, where the family home has since been.

About two weeks ago Mr. Gutzka came to Decorah to visit his daughter, Mrs. Emil Rosenthal. The infimities of old age laid heavily upon him and when illness came he quietly fell into that sleep from which there is no waking in this world. Death claimed him on Saturday last in his 83d year.

He leaves, besides his wife, two sons, three daughters, one sister, Mrs. Sellman of Canoe Township, and one brother in Canada, to keep green his memory.

Brief services were held at the home of Mr. Emil Rosenthal in West Decorah by Rev. Schlung, of the German M. E. church, and Frohsinn Singing Society rendered two beautiful songs, after which the remains were taken to the German Lutheran church at Locust, of which congregation Mr. Gutzka was a member, and Rev. K. Seehuus preached his funeral sermon. The remains were interred in the Locust cemetery.

The relatives of Mr. Gutzka wish to extend their thanks to friends for the many kindnesses extended to them in their bereavement.
