Funeral services for Gerhard B. Hellen, a retired Decorah farmer and carpenter, were held Friday, Oct. 14, at1:30 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Locust. Mr. Hellen died Oct. 11 at the Howard County Hospital in Cresco.

The Rev. Gerhard Brase conducted the services. Organist was Alan Sensor, accompanying the congregation singing “How Great Thou Art” and “Abide With Me.” Pallbearers were Phillip Severson, Vernon Ellickson, Richard Anderson, A. Forde, Ervin Hellen and Donald Stoskopf. Sensor-French Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements, with burial at the Locust Cemetery.

Gerhard Benjamin Hellen was born Nov. 27, 1904, in Madison Township, the son of Albert and Mary (Nesheim) Hellen. He attended rural schools, and married Agnes Macal in 1935 at Madison Lutheran Church.

He had farmed in the Pleasant Township area, and was a carpenter before moving to Decorah in 1967. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife Agnes and one son, Gordon of Decorah. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Lester in 1954.
