Born August 22, 1917 - Died December 17, 1999
Gerhard M. Groth, 82, of rural Decorah, died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 20, at 11 a.m., at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Locust, rural Decorah, with the Rev. Bernie Oebser, interim pastor, officiating.Alan Sensor was the organist. Songs included “What A Friend We Have in Jesus” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand.”

Casket bearers were Greg Greenwaldt, Joel Anderson, Jamie Anderson, Tim Anderson, Stacy Greenwaldt and Christina Jump.Burial was at the Locust Cemetery. The French and Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Gerhard was born Aug. 22, 1917, in Clayton County, the son of Martin Groth and Bertha West. He attended country school in Clayton County.
As a young man, he moved to the Decorah area. Gerhard attended school in Des Moines and then moved to Baltimore, Md., during Word War II and worked on airplanes.

He was united in marriage with Irene O. Anderson Jan. 5, 1939. They farmed near Sattre and Burr Oak, then moved to Colorado for a few years, and then to Rochester, Minn. They returned to his mother’s farm by Locust.Gerhard then worked doing carpentry work. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and especially ice fishing. He was a life member of Farm Bureau and a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Locust.

Survivors include three daughters, Gretchen and Eldon Greenwaldt of Rochester, Minn.; Elaine and Richard Anderson of Decorah, and Rita and Vernie Jump of Mabel, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Greg Greenwaldt, Joel Anderson, and wife Dawn, Jamie Anderson and wife Bobbie, Tim Anderson, Shelly Sobolik and husband Dan, Troy Anderson, Stacy Greenwaldt and Christina Jump; six great-grandchildren, Kyle, Josh, Robert, Jesse, Cheyenne and Breyin; several sisters and brothers-in-law; and nieces and nephews.

Gerhard Groth was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene, who died in 1986; a grandson, Devon Sobolik; one brother, Lawrence West; and one sister, Viola Gisleson.
