Vera Hovey 1907 – 1980
Mrs. Clarence (Vera) Hovey of Decorah died Tuesday, Sept. 2 at Lutheran Hospital LaCrosse, Wisc. She was 72.
Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 5 at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Locust with visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. Pastor Gerhard Brase conducted the services and organist Mrs. Ransome Bolson accompanied the soloist, Mrs. Arlin Fisher. Cathey Barth, Janeen McKernan and Kim Hutchins were on the floral committee.
Burial was at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Jeff Hovey, Randy Hovey, David Barth, Danny Barth, John McKernan, and Randy Hutchins. Honorary pallbearers were Burton Oyen, Paul Thingvold, Immanuel Weiss, Earl Erickson, Otis Rustad and Palmer Anderson. Steine Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Vera Lucille Masters was born Dec. 1, 1907, in Winneshiek County to Guy and Edna Masters. She attended rural schools and Decorah High School. She married Clarence J. Hovey on Jan. 13, 1926 at First Lutheran Parsonage. She always lived in Winneshiek County and moved to Decorah in 1975. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, the Joan of Arc Club of Burr Oak, ALCW and circle of St. John’s.
She is survived by her husband and two children, Mrs. William (Norma Jean) Schrandt of Fredricksburg and Ronald Hovey of Fort Collins, Colo. Other survivors include six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren: two brothers, Lyle and Howard Masters of Mabel and a sister Ethel Mastellar of Alexandria, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Marie Ilone, who died in infancy, one brother and one sister.
