Clarence J. Hovey 1902 – 1988
Funeral services for Clarence J. Hovey, 85, a retired area Decorah farmer, were held April 22 at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Locust.
Mr. Hovey died April 18 at Ft. Collins, Colo.
The Rev. Gerhard Brase conducted the services, with Alan Sensor as organist and Marilyn Holland as soloist. Pallbearers were Daniel and David Barth, Gary, Tom and Jeff Hovey and John McKernan. Honorary pallbearers were Gerhard and Paul Thingvold, Ivan Haugen, David Iverson, Palmer A. Anderson, Burton Oyen, Raymond Barth and Elton Bradley. Sensor-French Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements, with burial at St. John’s Cemetery.
Clarence John Hovey was born Sept. 25, 1902, in Decorah, the son of Tom and Juliette (Seim) Hovey. He attended rural schools, Valdres College and Luther College. He married the former Vera Masters Jan. 13, 1926, at First Lutheran Church in Decorah. She preceded him in death Sept. 2, 1980.
Mr. Hovey farmed in the Locust area for 40 years before moving to Decorah in 1975. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Locust.
Survivors include one daughter, Norma Jean Schrandt of Fredricksburg, a son, Ronald Hovey of Fort Collins, Colo.; five grandchildren; two brothers, Walter and Theodore, both of Decorah; and one sister, Sylvia Folsom of Thornton, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a daughter, Marie, in infancy.
