John A. L. Matter
Born Oct. 18, 1878 - Died Apr. 8, 1964Funeral services for John A. L. Matter were held Friday, April 10, at Decorah Lutheran Church. The 1:30 p.m. services were conducted by the Rev. B. Schlachtenhaufen.
Matter, 84, of 305 Iowa Ave., Decorah, died Wednesday, April 8, at Smith Memorial Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past year.
Burial was in Locust Cemetery. Steine’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Thomas Keefe, John Matter, James Matter, Gerald Harvey, Richard Matter and Charles Sensor.
Floral committee was comprised of Miss Sharon Lansing, Miss Debrah Landswerk, Mrs. Elmer Trampel, and Mrs. Alton Lovstuen.
The deceased, a retired farmer and owner of Matter’s Ballroom just north of Decorah, was born Oct. 18, 1878, In Winneshiek County, the son of George and Mary Matter.
He attended rural schools. Emma Stoskopf and he were married March 22, 1905, at the bride’s home in Sattre. His wife survives.
The couple had 11 children, 10 of whom survive: Mrs. John (Florence) Lansing, Mason City; Walter, Houston, Tex.; Mrs. Leonard (Hattie) Keefe, Decorah; Elmer, Postville; Roger, Decorah; Leonard, Decorah; Mrs. Milo (Alma) Harvey, Decorah; Mrs. Willard (Margaret Sorenson), Decorah; Mrs. Galen (Ethel) Sensor, Decorah; and Mrs. Spencer (Bernice) Landswerk, Decorah. A son, Willard, died in infancy.
Matter lived in rural Winneshiek County until moving to Decorah about 10 years ago.
He was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church. Survivors, in addition to his spouse and 10 children, include 24 grandchildren.
His parents, one son, five sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.
