Roy Philip Loven, 97, of Waukon, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a lengthly illness.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 8, at 10:30 a.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, eith the Revs. Lynn Groe and David Schafer officiating.

Casketbearers were Scott Loven, Thomas Loven, John Loven, Justin Landstrom, Rick Langland, and Roger Pladsen.

Honorary bearers were Roger Westby, Lyle Westby, Walter Larson, Lynn Morrow, John Morrow, Carlton Chrstianson and Wayne Leidahl.

Burial was at the Oakland Cemetery. The Martin Funeral Home of Waukon handled arrangements.

Roy was born June 17, 1903, on the rural Ridgeway farm of his parents, John and Mary (Lysta) Loven. He was baptized at Orleans Lutheran Church and confirmed at Glenwood Lutheran Church.

He attended the Rocksvod School in rural Winneshiek County. Following school, Roy farmed with his parents until early adulthood. During the Depression years, he worke building roads for Winneshiek County.

On May 6, 1933, Roy married Ruth Onsager at Glenwood Lutheran Church. They moved to Waukon in 1935, after Roy started a service station, auto repair and used parts auto salvage busines on Elon Road east of town.

Ruth died in 1956 and Roy continued operating the auto business until 1961.

On July 19, 1964, he married Althea M. Jacobson at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. He enjoyed spending time at his farm, which he rented out, and often would help with the work and repairs.

Roy was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he held various offices and was particularily active in building the new church in 1951.

He was an accomplished woodworker and made many handsome things in his shop. He enjoyed visiting with friends, traveling, playing cards and family times.

Survivors include his wife, Althea of Waukon; two sons, Russell and Juanita Loven of Guttenberg, and Richard Loven of Waukon; four grandchildren, Scott (Becky) Loven of Decorah, Sheree (Charlie) Frego of Norfolk, N.Y., Susan (Randy) Ahlberg of Longmont, Colo., and Thomas (Michaelene) Loven of Mt. Airy, Md; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Violet Rosendahl of Decorah.

Roy Loven was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ruth; a great-granddaughter, Annika Ahlberg; a sister, Anga Saak and an infant sister Anga; and five brothers, Melvin, Jack, Albert, Henry, and Carl.
