Melvin A. Skaim, 78, of Decorah, died Wednesday, April 30, 1997, at Oneota Riverview Care Facility of cancer.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 3, at 2 p.m. at Decorah Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Ole Winter officiating. Diane Kvamme was the organist. The congregation sang "How Great Thou Art," "I Know that My Savior Lives" and "Beautiful Savior."
Casket bearers were Stanley Arneson, Norman Brynsaas, Curtis Faldet, Donald O. Johnson, Syver Ramstad and Jim Steine. Burial was at the Pontoppidan Lutheran cemetery. The Fjelstul Home handled arrangements.
Melvin was born Jan. 21, 1919, in Glenwood Township of Winneshiek County, the son of Ben and Oline (Underdahl) Skaim. He was baptized Feb. 8, 1919, by the Rev. William Rasmussen, and confirmed July 3, 1932, by the Rev. Peter Kjorlaug, both at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church.
Mel attended the rural schools of Glenwood Township. He never married.
He farmed a few years and, in 1954 he started to work at the Decorah Creamery. He retired in 1984, after 30 years. After that, Mel was the custodian at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Decorah for 13 years. He was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church.
Mel enjoyed his friends. A lover of music, he played the accordion in local bands. He had been a resident of Oneota Riverview Care Facility since March 12, 1997.
Survivors include a brother, Oscar and Hazel Skaim of Decorah; and three sisters, Lillian Carlsborg of Decorah, Emma and Leo Tollefson of Decorah, and Minnie Gulrud of Madison, Wis.
Melvin Skaim was preceded in death by his parents; and six brothers and sisters; Joseph Skaim, Clara Anderson, Anna Anderson and Louise Sutton, and one brother and one sister in infancy.
