Leila Mae (Young) Matter was born at home in rural Decorah, Iowa on February 24, 1910, the daughter of Philip and Clara (Barth) Young. She attended rural country school in Hesper Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa through the eighth grade.

She was united in marriage to Stanley M. Matter on February 24, 1928 at Leila's home farm in rural Decorah.

Leila and Stanley farmed for many years in Canoe Township until he died on May 31,1967. She then worked in food service in Decorah Community Schools and then as a waitress in several restaurants in Decorah including Ostrander's, Ruby's and the Sweet Shop.

Leila was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Hannah Circle. She also liked to travel.

Leila became a resident of Aase Haugen Home in Decorah on November 6, 2004. She died there on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at the age of 98.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley; her parents; one brother, Lester Young; one sister, Laverne Nordsving; and three brothers-in-law: Cy Nordsving, Dean Price and Lloyd Gjere.

Leila is survived by two sisters: Edna Gjere and lona Price of Decorah, IA; one sister-in-law, Helen Young of Cedar Rapids, IA; and by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
