Elmer W. Matter was born on the family farm on Clay Hill, rural Decorah, October 10, 1913, to parents John and Emma (Stoskopf) Matter He was baptized and confirmed in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Elmer attended Clay Hill School, rural Decorah.
Elmer Matter and Ruth were united in marriage on November 2, 1939. To this union, one son Richard was born. Elmer farmed most of his life, was involved with Matter's Ballroom, and made time for fishing whenever he could. Elmer was a member of the American Holstein Association and Decorah Lutheran Church.
In 1980, Elmer received the American Lutheran Church Helping Hand Award. In 1987, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the American Holstein Association and the Pioneer Dairy Award.
It pleased our Heavenly Father to call Elmer away from this life at the age of 84, on Saturday, May 2, 1998, while with his family at his home, near Frankville.
Elmer is survived by his wife Ruth of rural Decorah; one son, Richard and his wife Lois of rural Decorah; five sisters, Ethel Sensor, Margaret Sorenson, Alma Harvey, all of Decorah; Bernice Landswerk of Maple Plains, MN, and Florence Lansing of Mason City, IA; one brother, Roger Matter of Decorah; three grandchildren Lincoln of rural Decorah, Lance and his wife Lori of Cresco, IA, and Lynette of DePere, WI; one great-grandchild Eric of Cresco, IA.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Leonard, Walter, and Willard Matter; one sister, Hattie Keefe.
