Arlene Genevieve Teslow was born on June 22, 1919 to Albert Hans Teslow and Hilda Margrette Lovstuen. She was baptized at Glenwood Lutheran, confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Decorah and graduated from Waukon High School in 1936.

After her mother’s passing, when Arlene was at the tender age of five, she was raised in turns by her father, grandparents, and aunts and uncles. One fateful Saturday night at Matter’s Ballroom, she met a handsome young man with coal black hair who swept her off her feet. Roger and Arlene were married on February 18, 1940 at Glenwood Lutheran Church.

They moved to Decorah to first live in a tiny space in the Decorah Hatchery building. Together, they worked side by side to build a successful business, the Decorah Hatchery, and moved to Franklin street to raise their three sons.

Arlene was very engaged in the world around her and was involved in many community organizations including the Luther College Women’s Club, Cub Scouts, Decorah Kilties, and Hospital Auxiliary. Her faith was her foundation and she was diligent in spreading the “Good News” of Jesus. She found much joy in living out her faith by serving as a Sunday School teacher and singing in the choir at Decorah Lutheran Church, of which she was a member for 70 years. In addition to being a voracious reader, her hobbies included gardening, card clubs, and especially cooking and baking.

She was preceded in death by Roger (1999), her beloved husband of 59 years. Surviving are sons Drs. James (Linda) Matter from Fergus Falls, MN, David Matter from Burnsville, MN, and Steven (Peg) Matter, Decorah, IA; nine grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren; and her brother Walter (Lorraine) Teslow. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Stanley and Lester.

A memorial service at Decorah Lutheran Church will be at 1:30 PM on Saturday, Nov. 13. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Lutheran World Relief or the Decorah Lutheran Food Pantry.
