Burton Parnell Oyen was born April 17, 1916 in Glenwood Township, the third of six children born to Gunder and Nellie (Giving) Oven.
Burton was baptized and confirmed at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, and educated in the country schools of Glenwood Township. As a young man he worked for a local fanner. Henry Olson, hauling cream.
On February 17, 1939, he married Rose Moen at Glenwood Lutheran Church. Along with Burton's older brother Sherman they moved to the Ruffridge place just north of Locust which Burton farmed with Sherman for 21 years. Burton and Sherman were skilled farmers, and in 1954 they won the Winneshiek County contour com field contest.
Adapting to their new German neighbors, Burton and Rose joined St. John's Lutheran Church at Locust where they have remained faithful members, even after they could no longer attend services. On March 11, 1945 Rose and Burton were blessed with the birth of their son Duane.
In 1960 they bought the Luros farm just a mile north of the Ruffridge place, and they lived here until 1990 when they moved to the house on East Broadway in Decorah.
In February of 1991 Burton suffered a series of strokes that left him partially paralyzed. Confined to a wheelchair, he enjoyed visits from old friends and especially looked forward to Wednesday afternoons when Ray Barth, Carl Leistikow, and Lloyd Vine would come over to play whist.
Burton died at home last Thursday morning, July 25.Burton is survived by his wife Rose, his son Duane and daughter-in-law Lynne Oyen of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; his brother Sherman of Decorah; and his sister Corrine and brother-in-law Paul Thingvold of Decorah.
