Chuck received his education in the rural schools of Winneshiek County. He served in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy as a combat engineer with the 5th Army during World War II

On May 26, 1946, he was united in marriage with Lois Simonson at First Lutheran Church, Decorah, Iowa. In 1947 the young couple moved to Redondo Beach, California, where Chuck worked as a building contractor. In 1974 they moved to Palm Springs when Chuck became Director of Building and Safety for the City of Rancho Mirage, a position he held until his retirement in 1987.

When Lois died in September of 1992, Chuck sold their house in Palm Springs and moved back to Decorah to be close to family after 45 years being away. On Sunday evening, June 5, 1994, he passed away at his home of an apparent heart attack at the age of 72 years.

Survivors include three brothers—Norman and his wife Leonora of Harmony, Minnesota. Ole and his wife Anna of Decorah, Harold and his wife Ardith of Cresco; two sisters—Clara Stegen of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Elise Stegen of Mabel, Minnesota; his mother-in-law Emma Simonson of Waukon; his sister-in-law Ardeth Iverson and her husband Milton of Dorchester, many nieces and nephews; and Florence Wennes of Decorah, a special friend whose path in life has paralleled that of Chuck and Lois.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers— Albert and Harold (infancy); three sisters—Anne Severson, Hannah Engen, Elise (infancy); his father-in-law Alfred Simonson; and a sister-in-law, Delores Simonson.
