Myrtle was born November 7, 1909 in Pleasant Township, the daughter of Anton and Ida (Hanson) Ellingson. She was baptized and confirmed at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church and attended the rural schools of Pleasant Township.

On June 17, 1931 Myrtle was married to Lester Bigler in the Ellingson home. They lived on the Bigler home place for several years before moving to their own farm just south of Sattre in 1938. Five daughters and one son were born to Myrtle and Lester.

Upon her marriage Myrtle transferred her membership to Lester's church — St. John's at Locust — where she was active in the Ladies Aid, ALC Women, and, most recently, the St. John's Women of the ELCA and Morning Circle. A faithful worshiper, she never missed a Sunday if she could help it. And when she couldn't, she still kept sending her offerings.

Myrtle and Lester made their life farming together until Lester's death in 1981. Myrtle carried on, raising chickens, sheep, and cows until 1990 when she reluctantly moved into Decorah Making her peace with town life, she made the Ohio Street apartment her home until this fall, when a stroke made it necessary for her to enter the Aase Haugen Home. After a succession of light strokes, Myrtle passed away last Sunday, December 5th.

She is survived by her five daughters and sons-in law: Lorraine & Harvey Houck of Decorah; Evelyn & David Sersland of Decorah; Muriel & David Olsen of Merced, California; Kathryn & Douglas Berg of Bismarck, North Dakota; Lois & Noren Smith of Ionia, Iowa, her son and daughter-in-law, Steven & Deborah Bigler of Barrow, Alaska; her brother and sister-in-law. Erven & Thelma Ellingson; three sisters and two brothers-in-law: Irene Tilleros of Decorah; Bernice & Mark Byrnes of Phoenix, Arizona; Helen & Donald Bergan of Spencer, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren, and six greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lester, her sister Tilvina Bigler, and three brothers: Julius, Arnold, and Clifford.

Myrtle will be remembered for her positive attitude, giving spirit, and love of people. She is admired and loved by all of us who came into her life.

Blessed be her memory among us.
