Thursday Oct 31 our entire community was shocked and saddened when the cablegram announcing the death of Harold Spaun was received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Spaun. As one person all hearts turned toward the sorrowing parents, and all the comfort and sympathy that could be expressed was tendered them.

Harold, their only child, grew to manhood here and was a popular and splendid example of our best American youth. His life and influence was woven into all that was for the betterment and uplift of Frankville and all the children, as well as the more mature citizens, counted Harold their kind and loyal friend. “None knew him but to love him. None named him but to praise.”

Harold Adelbert Spaun was born in Frankville, Iowa, June 13, 1895. He was called to the colors April 25, 1918, and left Decorah the following morning for Camp Dodge, where he was made a member of Co. A, 338th machine gun battalion. After a three weeks’ stay there he was moved to Camp Travis, Texas, and transferred to Co. K, 358th Infantry, remaining there until June 9, when his company was sent to Camp Mills, Long Island, and later sailed, landing in France the last of June. Harold was promoted to corporal the 1st of August and several weeks after was moved up to the front lines, where he died in action Sept. 26, just five months from the time he left home.
