Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for Fred Leonard Sanderson, age 88, were held Saturday, June 16 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, Iowa. The 11 a.m. services were conducted by Rev. Lynn Groe. Burial was in the Ridgeway Lutheran Cemetery in rural Ridgeway, Iowa in Winneshiek County. Martin Funeral Home of Waukon, Iowa was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were David Sanderson, Dennis Sanderson, Alan Sanderson, Ron Sanderson, Don Sanderson, and Dale Sanderson.
Fred Leonard Sanderson, son of Ole and Tolena (Johnson) Sanderson, was born July 19, 1901 in Ridgeway, Iowa. He attended rural school near Ridgeway. On June 20, 1923 he married Mabel B. Magnus at Ridegeway Lutheran Church. He was owner and operator of Schley Creamery from 1923-1924 and a cheese and buttermaker at Ridgeway and Schley. They farmed in the rural Ridgeway area from 1925-1960 when they moved to Edgerton, Wisconsin where he was a maintenance man at Nunn-Bush Shoe Factory. They moved to Waukon, Iowa in 1973. He had been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center for three months. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Waukon Senior Citizens.
Fred Leonard Sanderson died Wednesday, June 13, 1990 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Merlin Donald Sanderson who died September 20, 1989; 3 brothers, Anton Sanderson, Carl Sanderson, and Roy Sanderson; and 3 sisters, Anette, Ethel, and Verna.
He is survived by his wife, Mabel Sanderson; a son Richard "Sandy" Sanderson of Waukon, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild: a brother, Alton Sanderson of Ridgeway, Iowa and 2 sisters, Thelma Luhman and Sara LaVelle, both of Decorah, Iowa.
