Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for Stella Severson, age 98, of Decorah, Iowa were held Wednesday, May 9 at Decorah Lutheran Church with pastors James M. Glesne and Emil Martinson conducting the 11 a.m. services. Burial was in the Lutheran Cemetery with Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah, Iowa in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were John Kerndt, Jr., Tom Kerndt, Craig Kerndt, Norman Sivesind, Robert Sivesind, and Duane Flatland.
Stella, daughter of Tollef O. and Johanna or Johonna (Barlow) Tollefson, was born October 8, 1891 in Decorah, Iowa. She attended rural schools in Calmar Township in Winneshiek County. She also attended Valders College, Iowa State Teachers College, and Upper Iowa University. Most of her life was spent in the Decorah area. She taught school in Bassett and rural schools of Winneshiek County. On August 24, 1921 she married Nels Severson in West Union, Iowa. He died February 12, 1964. She was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and was active in the church circles and Ladies Aid. She also was a member of the third ward hospital unit. She had been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, Iowa for one and a half years.
Stella Severson died Sunday, May 6, 1990 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, Iowa. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sons in infancy, Darwin Severson and Loran Severson; 3 brothers, Elmer Tollefson, William Tollefson, and Roy Tollefson, and a sister, Ada Hillesland (or Hillesand).
She is survived by 3 daughters, Mae Jean (Joe) Bakke of Postville, Iowa, Darlene (Clarence) Sivesind and Lorna (John) Kerndt, Sr., both of Waukon, Iowa; 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
