Earl W. Haefner, Jr.
Earl Wesley Haefner, Jr., died February 22, 1998, at the VA Medical Center in Grand Junction, Colorado at the age of 72.
He was born on May 9, 1925, to Earl Wesley and Clara (Brandt) Haefner in Cedar Rapids, IA. Mr. Haefner spent his youth in various communities in Iowa, as well as El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. He graduated from Postville High School in 1944. He was active in band, chorus, football and basketball while attending Postville High School during his junior and senior years. He served in the Army during WW II and later attended Iowa State University at Ames.
He married Helen Summerton Paterson in Tucson, Arizona, on July 3, 1958. They later divorced. She died in Scotland in 1980. Two daughters, Karen and Melanie, grew up in Scotland.
Mr. Haefner lived in Prescott, AZ, for 15 years prior to moving to Grand Junction, CO. in 1975. He did volunteer service for several years at the Grand Junction VA Medical Center, where he put in 2,818 hours. He had a lifetime interest in aviation and was a member of the Confederate Air Force, Rocky Mountain Wing, in Grand Junction. He was also a member of the American Legion, Robbins McMullen Post No. 37.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen Haefner and Melanie and husband David Glen; and a grandson, Logan Glen, all of Dundee, Scotland; his sister, Margaret and husband David Palo; a nephew, a niece and grandniece, all of Grand Junction, CO; as well as an aunt, Lois and husband Ewald Brandt and a cousin, Robert Brandt of Postville.
A memorial was held March 1 at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Grand Junction, CO. Cremation has taken place and interment will be at Bloomfield Cemetery in Castalia, IA, sometime next summer.
