William J. Gebhardt, age 58, of Sparta, Wisconsin died Friday, February 9, 1990 at St. Luke's Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His services were held Tuesday, February 13 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah, Iowa. The Rev. John Paisley conducted the 11 a.m. services. Burial was in the church cemetery with military service at graveside by Helof-Holm VFW Post 1977 and Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post 163. Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah, Iowa was in charge of arrangements. Visitation was Monday after 4 p.m. A Knights of Columbus Rosary by Council 4208 was at 7 p.m. and a vigil service at 8 with an honor guard from Davis Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. Casket bearers were Kurt Bowermaster, Mark Bowermaster, Earl Haas, Gary Knickerbocher, Dennis Krugger, and Rex Stout. Honorary pallbearers were Tom Baumgartner, Derward Hansen, Wayne Bryant, Frank Hyde, Robert Carriger, Robert Kugel, Scott Core, Donald Olberding, Bruce Fritsch, John Ryan, and Fred Writz, Knights of Columbus Council 4208 and the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA) and Chapter Switzerland of Iowa Harmonizers.

William was born April 8, 1931 in McGregor, Iowa to John Christian and Golda (Knickerbocher) Gebhardt. He attended Upper Iowa University and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On February 13, 1987 he married Linda A. Johnsrud at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah, Iowa. He was a field representative for MidAmerica Dairy, Inc. of Newton, Iowa and had lived in McGregor,Iowa, Waukon,Iowa, Decorah, Iowa and Sparta, Wisconsin. He was a member of St. Benedict's Church Choir, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and Switzerland of Iowa Harmonizers.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Dorothea Bowermaster.

Surviving are his wife, a niece, and 2 nephews.
