Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for Irene W. Sersland, age 91, of Decorah, Iowa were held Saturday, November 15, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. Rev. Kim W. Smith officiated. Pallbearers were David Bostrom, Mark Bostrom, Dennis Cline, David Dotseth, Bruce Sersland, Rodney Sersland, Ron Sersland, Sidney DeLuca. Honorary pallbearers were Irene's many friends and family members. Burial was in the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Irene was the daughter of Julius and Laura (Lien) Olson. She was born May 4, 1906 in rural Clermont, Iowa, Clayton County. She received her education in the rural schools of Winneshiek County, Iowa. Irene was united in marriage to Hillman H. Sersland on August 28, 1929 in the Springfield Lutheran Church. She lived in the Decorah area all of her life and was actively involved in the dry cleaning business. She was a member of the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, WELCA and Elizabeth Circle. She was also a member of the Garden Club, Farm Bureau Women, Republican Women, Vesterheim Association and Elks Lodge. She enjoyed her family and friends.
Irene died Tuesday, November 11, 1997 at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility, where she had been a resident since June 12, 1993. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hillman, who died October 21, 1985; 2 sisters, Viola Swingle and Ruth Storey, and 1 brother, Milard Olson.
She is survived by 2 sons, Howard (Karol) Sersland of Decorah, Iowa and Walter "Wally" (Sonja) Sersland of Monona, Iowa, and 1 daughter, Marolyn (Gary) Bostrom of West Union, Iowa; 9 grandchildren: Keith (Alexis) Sersland, Cheryl (Dennis) Cline, Ron Sersland, David (Pam) Bostrom, Mark (Robin) Bostrom, Laurie Bostrom, Lea (Sidney) DeLuca, Wendy (David) Dotseth, Rodney (Stefanie) Sersland; 13 great-grandchildren: Rachel Sersland, Eric Taylor, Jason Cline, Nathan Cline, Kevin Cline, Valerie Bostrom, Lauren Bostrom, Jack Bostrom, Lucas Bostrom, Alexandra Bostrom, Alex Sersland, Christopher Sersland, and Amanda Dotseth; 1 brother, Vernon (Hazel) Olson of Decorah, Iowa; 4 sisters, Agnes Gilson of Elgin, Iowa, Myrtle Graham of Apache Junction, Arizona, Florence Ode of Covina, California, and Stella (Robert) Mitchell of Wickenburg, Arizona; 2 sisters-in-law, Maxine Olson and Florence Johnson of Decorah, Iowa; 3 brothers-in-law, Kenneth (Diane) Sersland of Madison, Wisconsin, Arnold (Pat) Sersland of Mt. Vernon, Washington, and Orval Seegmiller of Decorah, Iowa in addition to many nieces and nephews.
