Funeral services for Nyle Lester Nesvik were held Wednesday, August 14, 1996 at the Ossian Lutheran Church in Ossian, Iowa. Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiated. Burial was in the Calmar Lutheran Cemetery, Calmar, Iowa. Pallbearers were the United States Naval Reserve Center Unit from LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Honorary pallbearers were Don Gullickson, Daryl Hinton, and his nephews Rick Nesvik, Ron Nesvik, Randy Nesvik, and Russ Nesvik. Full military honors were rendered at graveside by the United States Naval Reserve Center and Monona, Iowa American Legion Post 519 and Am/Vets Post 0027 of Monona. Enlisted personnel of the United States Navy Fleet Reserve presented the United States Flag to his daughter, Annette, on behalf of the family with a volley of three shots fired by the Monona AmVets/American Legion Post. Schultz Funeral Home of Monona, Iowa was in charge of services.

Nyle Lester Nesvik was born September 3, 1934 in Springfield Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa to Melvin and Amelia (Kratz) Nesvik. He received his education in Ossian graduating from the Ossian Public High School. In 1952 he enlisted in the United States Army, serving 4 years, during the Korean War as a parachute jumper behind enemy lines. He was discharged from the Army as a Sergeant First Class. He returned to the Ossian area for about one year and re-enlisted in the United States Navy as a Parachute Rigger, serving in Vietnam. He was later Honorably Discharged in 1974 after 19 years of service having attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer, Chief Parachute Rigger. He earned several personal Decorations, the Legion of Merit, Silver Star with a V for Valor, two Purple Hearts, and six Good Conduct Awards. He received various campaign medals during his different assignments. He was a dedicated military man, carrying out his duties with distinction.The appearance, personal image and men under him was without reproach.

After his years in the service Nyle attended the University of Wisconsin and completed a maintenance program at the Northeast Iowa Technical Institute of Masonry. He worked for Adams Nut and Bolt company. He enjoyed trap and skeet shooting, hunting, fishing, and carpentry.

Nyle married Linda Reilly and they became the parents of 3 children. They later divorced. He was a lifelong member of Fleet Reserve, Cedar Rapids, D.A.V. Iowa Chapter 8, American Legion Post 519 of Monona, Iowa, Veterans of Foreign Wars #1977, Decorah, Iowa, AmVets Post 0027 Monona, Iowa, National Rifle Association and Navy Fleet Reserve Association.

Nyle died at his home in Monona, Iowa on August 11, 1996. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Harlan Nesvik.

He is survived by his fiancee, Mary Welch of Monona, Iowa, 2 daughters, Annette (Marty) Looney of Marion, Iowa and Michelle (Chris) Schlee of Strawberry Point, Iowa, and 1 son, Nyle Scott Nesvik of Portland, Oregon; 6 grandchildren, 4 nephews and many other family and friends.
