Funeral services for Arthur J. Svendsen were held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 18 at Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia, Iowa. The Rev. H.W. Wolfgram officiated. Schutte Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Castalia, Iowa. Casket bearers were Wayne Dahms, Ed Linderbaum, George Wander, Robert Szabo, Nilus Imoehl, and Gary Breitsprecher.

Arthur J. Svendsen, son of Johannas and Anna (Mikkelsen) Svendsen was born August 18, 1921 at Bloomfield Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. He died early Wednesday morning September 16, 1987 at his home in Castalia, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Stavanger Lutheran Church, rural Ossian, Iowa. He attended rural schools in Bloomfield Township. On December 29, 1946 he married Mary Brown at the Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia. The couple had 4 children. They farmed in Bloomfield and Frankville Townships. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia, where he served on the church council. He was a member of the Castalia Town Council. Arthur was a member of the U.S. Navy serving in World War II on the ship USS John C. Butler. This was the only Destroyer Type Ship to receive the Presidential Citation and Navy Commendation.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Mrs. Theodore (Lilly) Zweibohmer and Esther Svendsen and 2 brothers, Norman Svendsen and one brother who died in infancy.

He is survived by his wife, Mary of Castalia; 2 sons, Larry Svendsen and his wife Mary Jean of Ossian, Iowa, David Svendsen and his wife Vicky of Castalia, Iowa; 2 daughters, Evelyn Einck of Ossian, Iowa and Norma and her husband, Duane Koenig of Postville, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 2 brothers Rueben Svendsen of Lawler, Iowa, John Svendsen of Castalia, Iowa and 3 sisters, Mildred Breitsprecher and Ellen Thompson, both of Ossian, Iowa and Arlette Bachelder, of Castalia, Iowa.
