Hazel Lenore Stee

Hazel Lenore Stee, 96, Castalia, Iowa, died Sunday, January 2, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Center, Postville, Iowa. Hazel was born on July 1, 1914, on the Tatro farm 2½ miles northwest of Clermont in Fayette Co. to Roy Russel and Bertha (Mary) Marie Anderson Tatro. She was baptized on October 12, 1915, and confirmed May 1929 at the West Clermont Lutheran Church. She graduated from Clermont High School in 1932. She was the last surviving member of her class.

On November 15, 1941, she was married to Harlan Adrian Stee of Castalia at the West Clermont Lutheran Church. They set up house-keeping in Castalia. Ellen Marie was born on November 20, 1942.

On January 14, 1943, Harlan was drafted for World War II. He was discharged on December 30, 1945. During this time he was gone, Hazel and Ellen Marie moved back to Clermont and lived with her mother and brother, Roy. Harlan Jr. was born on May 13, 1947.

Hazel belonged to Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, taught Sunday School and Harlan and Hazel were janitors for the church for many years. She was a Sunshine Lady and was a 16 year member of Women of the Moose Chapter 1735. She held offices in WELCA, Bloomfield Historical Society, The Kews and belonged to VFW auxiliary since 1952. She loved to cook and bake. She always had something in the freezer for company. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her daughter, Ellen Marie, at Good Sam, Postville; her son, Harlan Jr., and wife Ann of Bella Vista, Arkansas; two grandchildren, Greg and his wife Lisa; Kristin and her husband, Barry; eight great-grandchild; Daniel Schwartz, Stasha Dickson and husband Shane, Jared Stee, Alyssa Stee, Cory Hansen, Christoffer Schwartz, Kayla Schwartz and one great-great granddaughter, Maddy.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harlan Adrian on February 18, 1990, and her siblings, Evelyn Minerva, Clarence, Viola, Irene, Orval, Stella, Alice, Roy and Andree.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, January 6, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia, Iowa. The Rev. Dave Lenth will officiate.

Burial will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery, Castalia, Iowa.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 5, 2011, from 4-8 p.m. at the Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Postville, Iowa, and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
