From the Decorah Public Opinion: Military Funeral of Civil War Veteran Thursday, who died 25 January, 1937.

Funeral Services for Newell H. Everts, well known, 93 year old Civil War Veteran of Hesper, were held from the residence in Hesper and were largely attended. It was a Military funeral, delegation from the Helof Holms Post Number 1977, Veterans of Foreign Wars of Decorah, also delegations for the American Legion Post of Mabel, of which Mr. Everts step-son, Post Master, Percy Robinson of Hesper, was a member, being present.

Mr. Everts, was born Aug. 20, 1843 in Canada. When he was about three months old his parents returned to Vermont. He came to Winneshiek county, about 57 years ago, residing here for about 5 years, when he went to Colorado, where he ranched for 49 years west of Denver.

In 1862 Mr. Everts enlisted in Company H of the 6th Minnesota Infantry, at Rochester serving until the end of the Civil War. He came from patriotic stock, as his father enlisted in the 15th Iowa Infantry and his brother in the 2nd Minnesota Cavalry.

During his enlistment he spent half of it in a campaign against the Sioux Indians, who were on the warpath. After the campaign against the Indians was over, he was sent south taking part in the battle of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely.

He was a member of Colonel Hughes Post G.A.R. remaining a member until the post gave up its charter.

In 1852 he went to Rochester, when that now thriving city, had only three buildings.

Mr. Everts is survived by two sisters; Edith Griswold, of West Concord, Minn. and Mrs. Green of Texas, and two brothers; George of Tennessee and Zive of Texas; also a step son, Percy Robinson of Hesper, Iowa, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A daughter died some years ago.

Erikson, Joe Martinek, Olaf Fretheim, Lester L. Parks.

American Legion members from Mabel acted as pall bearers. Norman Alstad, member of the Luther College "Concert Band" blew taps and members of the Helof Holm Post fired the farewell salute. Burial was in the Hesper cemetery.

There are now two Civil War Veterans in Winneshiek County, A.O.Ash of Bluffton and A.T. Branhagen of Decorah.
