Harlan Adrian Stee

Funeral services for Harlan Stee were held Thursday, Feb. 22, 1990 at 10:30 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia, IA. The Rev. H. W. Wolfgram officiated. The Schutte Funeral service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery.

Harlan Adrian Stee, son of Melvin Herbert and Ellen (Hegland) Stee, was born April 14, 1910, on the old "Anderson 40" about two miles west of Castalia.

He died Sunday afternoon, Feb. 18, 1990 in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville.

He was baptized May 29, 1910 in the Stavanger Lutheran Church and confirmed in the Ossian Lutheran Church. He attended the Castalia School until tenth grade and was graduated from Postville High School in 1929.

On Nov. 15, 1941 he married Hazel Tatro at Clermont. They had two children. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre of Operations in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany.

He lived his entire life in Bloomfield Township, where he had been employed as a Rock Island Railroad section hand, a carpenter for 16 years, and was with the Winneshiek County Highway Department for 26 years.

He is preceded in death by 4 brothers, Herbert, Clifford, Merle and Morton.

Surviving are his wife, Hazel, a son, Harlan Stee, Jr., of Burlington, IA., a daughter, Ellen Marie of Castalia, 2 grandchildren, a great-grandson, a sister, Anna Engelhardt of Castalia and nephews.

He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, the V.F.W. Helof Holm Post No. 1977 of Decorah since 1952. He had served on the church council and taught Sunday School for many years. He was also active in the community and served as City Clerk for 30 years, Bloomfield Township Clerk for 20 years, Assessor, and Secretary of the Castalia Board of Education from 1948 to 1958. He had also been an officer of the Bloomfield Township Historical Society and the KEWS.

Pallbearers were Ed Engelhardt, Roger Engelhardt, Robbie Burrett, Harold Cooney, Merle Stee, Jr. and Robert Stee.
