Ellen M. Stee

Ellen M. Hegland was born July 15, 1875 near Ossian, a daughter of Ole J. and Sesil Hegland. She was baptized and confirmed at the Stavanger Lutheran Church. She attended the local rural schools.

On October 17, 1900, she was married to Melvin Stee, the ceremony taking place at the Stavanger Lutheran Church. They established their first home on a farm south of Ossian. She spent the remainder time of her life in the Ossian and Castalia communities. The family moved to Castalia in January of 1919 where she spent the remainder of her life.

She is survived by her six children. They are Herbert, Clifford, Merle, Anna (Mrs. Edwin Engelhardt) and Harlan of Castalia, and Morton of Decorah. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, two sisters and one brother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two grandchildren, seven brothers, and two sisters. Her husband passed away in June, 1958.

She passed away Friday, 2:55 p.m., at the home of her son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Merle Stee at Castalia. She had been bed-ridden for nine years.

The burial services were from the Merle Stee home on Monday to the Lutheran Church at Ossian. The Rev. Meinen of Castalia officiated.
