OBITUARY

Mrs. Peter E. Haugen passed away Sunday last after a long illness during much of which she was confined to her bed and had to be lifted as tenderly as a child. At the last death brought release from intense pain that had been her portion for the greater part of her illness.
Gunild Allen was born on March 28, 1835, at Flaa Hallingdahl, Norway. When she was nine years of age she came with her parents to America. They settled on Jefferson Prairie, Wis., where the deceased grew to young womanhood. In 1855 she became the wife of Peter E. Haugen, their marriage being performed by the late Rev. V. Koren. Mr. Haugen had previously become a resident of Winneshiek county, and here he brought his bride, the home being made on the farm three miles southwest of town and the which remained their place of abode for the greater part of their lives. Of the children born to them four grew to maturity. One daughter, Ella Louise, passed away at the age of nine. Ingri (Mrs. A.L. Himle) and Ingebret, the only son, died some years ago. Mr. Haugen died in January 1911, leaving the daughters Marie and Elsie (Mrs. Ashley Ellickson) as the only surviving members of the family. Mrs. Haugen is also survived by one brother, Andrew Allen of St. Paul
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon (Friday), at one o'clock at the house, followed by services at the United Lutheran Church at 1:30. Rev. O.E. Schmidt officiating. Interment will be made in the Haugen Cemetery.
Mrs. Haugen was a woman whose kindness and friendliness endeared her to many acquaintances and whose devotion to them will be one of the blessed memories for those who are left behind to carry through life.
