DEATH OF PETER E. HAUGEN
Pioneer Passes Away the His Home in This City After Extended Illness

Peter E. Haugen, one of the pioneer residents of Winneshiek county, passed away on Monday morning, at 3:15 o'clock, from a complication of heart trouble, bronchitis and diabetes, after an illness extending over a year, which confined him to his bed during the past two weeks.
Peter E. Haugen was born Nov. 24, 1833, in Eggedahl, Norway, and in 1840 came to America with his parents, settling near Beloit, Wis. In 1852 they came to this county, being among the earliest settlers. He was united in marriage to Gunild Allen of Beloit, Wis., Oct. 29, 1856, who, though in poor health, survives him, together with two daughters, Mrs. A.E. Ellickson of Maltby, S.D. and Miss Marie of this city. A daughter, Mrs. A.L. Himle and a son, Engebret, died some years ago, and several children died in infancy. For a good many years he conducted a farm and in 1865 engaged in the farm machinery business in Decorah, a few years later starting to buy grain. In 1876 he built a large elevator here. He also conducted a marble shop for some years where Adolph Gjevre's grocery store now is, so that he was engaged in various business enterprises in Decorah for about twenty years. For a number of years afterward he lived on his farm three miles south of the city, on the Calmar Road. For the past seven years he has been a resident of Decorah, having built a home at that time on the corner of Maple Avenue and Francis streets. He was prominent in public affairs, for some years being a member of the city council, and was once nominated for state senator by the democratic party and came within twenty votes of winning in the district, Winneshiek and Howard counties.
The funeral services will be held on tomorrow, Thursday afternoon at one o'clock from the home and at 1:30 from the United Lutheran Church, Rev. O.E. Schmidt officiating, with interment in the Haugen Cemetery on his old farm south of the city. (Haugen Cemetery is now known as Union Prairie)
