Death of An Aged Pioneer

Mrs. Ingred Haugen, widow of Engebret Peterson Haugen and mother of Peter and Gilbert Haugen and Mrs. Amund Molden, died on Saturday morning last the the home of her son Peter E., at aged 93 years and 10 months. Mrs. Haugen was born July 24th, 1802, in Norway, her father being sheriff of Hallingdahl. In 1832, she was married to Engebret Peterson Haugen and in 1842 they emigrated to America to seek a home. They settled in Wisconsin and until 1850 made their home near Beloit. During that year Mr Haugen made an extended trip through Wisconsin and Minnesota but failing to find satisfactory location was returning to Wisconsin when he learned of this region and that a number of Norwegian families - among them the Lommens, Opdahls, Johnsons, etc. - had taken up land here. He followed them and was satisfied with the prospect, securing the farm in this township which has ever since been the property of the family, and on which in the early days was located Henry M. Rice's Indian trading post. Mr. Haugen died in 1875. Since that time Mrs. Haugen has made her home with her children. Of late years she sas been blind, as age crept on her sight failing her. For a year past she has been bed-ridden, and death came to her as a happy relief. The funeral services, held on Monday afternoon, were very largely attended. Rev. A.L Huus officiated and the remains were laid to rest beside those of her husband in the cemetery near their home.
