Ernest William Phillips
Ernest Phillips, age 82, of Decorah Iowa, died on Friday, September 20, 2002 at the Onesota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah following a short illness.
Funeral services were held Monday, September 23, at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Kim Smith officiated.
Ernest William Phillips was born on September 26, 1919 in Conover, Iowa, the son of Edward and Mollie (Hynes) Phillips. Ernest attended country school in Conover. Erine served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was in Pearl Harbor when it was bombed. He also served in the Philippines, Australia and New Guinea.
Ernest married Venita Fischer on September 3, 1945 in Decorah. Erine worked construction as a crane operator for Comie Construction in Mason City and Coffeen Construction in Decorah, retiring in 1987. Ernest was a member of the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of Helof Holm VFW Post #1977. He enjoyed playing bingo, cards, walking his dog and doing woodworking and building things.
Ernest survivors include his two daughters, Sheri Kent, Decorah and Debby (Gary) Schellhorn of Marion; two sons, Eugene (Linda) Phillips of Decorah and Gary (Joy) Phillips of San Antonio, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one brother, Elmer (Francene) Phillips of Cedar Rapids; twin sister Jean (Tom) O'Hare of Waukon; several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Ernest was preceded in death by his wife Venita in 1990; son Dean in 1985; his parents, three sisters, Ina Yaim, Bessie Hanson and Irene Foss, and four brothers, Leonard, Bill, Mike and Raymond Phillips.
