Here is the Obituary for Susan Darrington Allen 1844-1909

After a long illness Mrs. John Allen passed away at the St. Mary's hospital in Rochester on Sunday last between ten and eleven o'clock in the evening. A few weeks ago Mrs. Allen went to the hospital and submitted to an operation but it seems was too weak to recover from the effects. She was in her sixty eighth year. Her daughter Mrs. D.J. Welch and son Albert also her husband were present at her death. She leaves a husband, five daughters and three sons.

The remains of the late Mrs. John Allen of Hesper were brought here from Rochester, Monday, she having died there Sunday. She recently underwent a severe surgical operation at the Mayo hospital and her advanced age and weakend condition prevented her recovery. The funeral services being held at the Friends church on Wednesday.

Susan Darrington was born in Bedfordshire, England, in 1842, and died September, 5, 1909, at Rochester, Minn., where she had been for an operation and treatment. Married to John Allen in 1865. Came to Hesper, Iowa, U.S. 1874. Eleven children were born to them, eight of whom are living , and three died in infancy. The husband and three boys and five girls are left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving wife and mother. Mrs. Allen became a member of the Wesleyan Methodist church of England when a girl, and she died in the faith. The funeral was held afternoon of the 8th. Although a rainy day, the church was filled. A profusion of beautiful flowers from friends and relatives covered the casket. One beautiful piece was from the school children in token of sympathy for Mr. Allen, their friend and janitor for many years
