Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Charlotte Theodora Hexom, widow of the late Pastor William T. Hexom, died Tuesday, September 5, 1989 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital, Decorah, Iowa at the age of 93. She was born July 25, 1896 in Decorah to Henry and Hilda (Jonsdatter) Larson. She graduated from the Decorah High School in 1914 and attended Valders Business College. To help pay college expenses, she played piano at the theatre for silent movies. From 1916 to 1921 she was a secretary and reporter for Ed Bailey at the Waukon Republican Newspaper Office in Waukon. During 1917-1918 she played cornet in the city band. She and William T. Hexom were married at Decorah Lutheran Church on July 14, 1921 by the Rev. O. Glesne. They lived in Virginia, MN and Hawkins, WI where he served as pastor for several churches. In 1939 they served the Big Canoe and Highland Lutheran Churches in Winneshiek County until his death May 30, 1965, after which she retired in Decorah.
She was active in the Decorah Community as a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, the ALCW, West Side Study Club, a volunteer for 17 years at Aase Haugen Home furnishing musical talent for the residents, member of the cancer board for ten years and its crusade chairman in 1967, Winneshiek County Hospital Auxiliary and WWI Auxiliary.
Surviving are six children, Mrs. Erling (Audrey) Jordahl of Coralville, Iowa, Mrs. Ransome (Connie) Bolson and Mrs. Wilbur C. (Eunice) Stoen of Decorah, David of Ramsey, MN, Charles of Waukesha, WI and Paul of Dubuque, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers, two at birth.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 9, 1989 at Big Canoe Lutheran Church, rural Decorah. Burial was in the Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah with Fjelstul Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
