Smith, Olena (Aasum) -- 1853 - 1941

The obituary for Olena Aasum Smith: 31 January, 1941, Mrs. A.J.Smith, resident of Ottertail county for the last 39 years, died at Henning 31 January, 1941. Mrs. A.J. Smith age 87 died at 1 a.m. Friday, at her home in Inman near Parkton. Death was due to complications incident to old age. Olena Aasum born in Trondhjem, Norway, 24 September, 1853, came to the U.S. at the age of 16, where she married Anton Smith. They then moved to Anoka and then to Inman, where she lived for 39 years. Mr. Smith preceded his wife in death 30 March 1917.

Eight children were born to this union, and are left to mourn their mother; four sons, John and William, Minneapolis, Edwin and Ole at home, 4 daughters Mrs. C.E. Dillaber, (Emma), and Mrs. Harry Hallet (Dehlia) of Minneapolis, Mrs. A. Jyland (Ada), of Rosoe, California, Mrs. H.S. Evjen (Anna), Battlelake. The past two years Mrs. Evjen has remained at home to care for her mother. 1 daughter died in infancy. 16 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; one brother Ove Aasum, Mabel, MN and one sister Mrs. E. Klegseth, Hesper, IA also survive. Services were held at Leaf Lake.
