Wayne E. Harkness, 93, a longtime Mabel-area-resident, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

He was born May 20, 1912, in Fillmore County to James and Inga (Munson) Harkness. He attended Mabel Schools and on Feb. 26, 1934, he married Ella Amdahl. She died Jan. 17, 1974.

On June 27, 1975, he married Lorraine Iverson Vatland. He farmed for many years and then worked at Amdahl Chevrolet in Mabel and also worked as a carpenter with Irvin and Arden Inglett. He was a member of the Mabel United Methodist Church and enjoyed camping and traveling.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine of Mabel, a daughter Elaine (Roger) Erickson of Marion, Iowa; a son, Jim (Deb) Harkness of Decorah, Iowa; two stepdaughters, Colleen (Ronald) Halvorson of Ridgeway, Iowa, and Naydene (Keith) Reicks of New Hampton, Iowa; one grandson, Mark Erikson; five step-grandchildren Brady Halvorson, Troy Reicks, Tracy Reicks, Travis Reicks and Trent Reicks; three great-grandchildren, Matthew Erickson, Chase Erickson and Nicole Lopaz; on step great-grandchild, Quinten Reicks; one great-great-grand daughter Emma Lopez; a sister, Lois Johnson of Mabel; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Glen and Richard.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Mabel United Methodist Church with Rev. David Laechel officiating. Burial will be in the Mabel Public Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.
