Lawrence Bruening

Lawrence Bruening, 87, of New Hampton, died. Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Home in West Union of natural causes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held today (Tuesday) at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Hampton.

Lectors for the service are grandchildren Brian Bruening and Dale Schilling. Offertory gifts will be presented by Sara Senner, Karen Bruening, Jennifer Bruening and Ronnie Traywick, Jr

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, New Hampton, with Steve Bruening, Rhonda Senner, Matt Bruening, Rose Roe, Carl Schilling, Dean Schilling, James Bruening and Neal Schilling serving as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers are Shelly Broich, Kathy Carpenter, Ruth Hibner; Barbara Schilling, Dale Schilling, Brian Bruening, Karen Bruening, Jennifer Bruening, Sara Senner, Jeremy Senner, Ronnie Traywick, Jr., Anna Traywick, Peggy Hoff, Vicky Smith and Christine Colvin.

Hugeback Funeral Home of New Hampton is handling arrangements.

Lawrence Bruening was born May 12, 1913 in Festina to Bernard and Clara (Busch) Bruening. He attended school in Festina at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic School.

In 1934 and 1935 he was a forestry leader in the Civilian Conservation Corp., and worked in Backbone State Park and in fishery activities around Decorah.

On Jan. 28, 1936, he married Marie Franzen in the St. Luke's Chapel in St. Lucas.

Initially, the couple farmed near Waucoma and Lawler, then moved to their farm north of New Hampton in 1942. Bruening had traded horses throughout the years and also broke horses for many owners. His wife, Marie, died Aug. 21, 1996.

Bruening had been active as a 4-H leader with the Jacksonville Renegades, was an honorary chapter farmer of the New Hampton FFA and had been chief ranger for the Catholic Order of Foresters.

He enjoyed going to livestock sales, fishing, traveling in the motor home with Marie and was active at the New Hampton Senior Center.

He will always be remembered for his willingness to lend a hand to anyone.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Bruening and wife Pat, and Mark Bruening and wife Judy, all of New Hampton; four daughters, Janet Senner and husband Ron of Hawkeye; Leona Schilling and husband Eyeroul, Madeline Colvin and husband David and Linda Traywick and husband Ronnie, all of Waterloo; 23 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Franzen, Evelyn Opperman and husband George, all of Hawkeye; and Loretta Kolar of Evansdale.

Lawrence Bruening was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marie; children Mary Lou, Jo Ann and John; a grandson; one great-grandson; two brothers, Marcellus and Louis Bruening; and five sisters, Elizabeth Franzen, Frances Thelman, Bertha Riha, Mildred Fels and Lucille Thielke.
