Aleda M. Knutson

Aleda M. Knutson, 81, of New Hampton died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of natural causes.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 20, at 1:30 p.m., at the Jerico Lutheran Church, rural New Hampton with the Rev. Kent Dethlefsen officiating.

Mary Beth Dethlefsen was the organist. She accompanied the congregation in singing "God Moves In a Mysterious Way," "Abide with Me," "My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less" and "Jesus Christ My Sure Defense." The last hymn was chosen by Todd Knutson, who was unable to attend.

Burial was at the church cemetery with Tim Knutson, Randy Ellingson, Eric Knutson, Aaron Johnson, Wallace Knutson and Ray Wiley serving as casket bearers. The Conway Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Aleda Mabel Orriette (Hereid) Knutson was born July 23, 1919, in Howard Co., daughter of John and Nettie (Hildahl) Hereid. She was baptized
Aug, 7, 1919 at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

She attended country school near her home in rural Chickasaw County, going on to graduate from New Hampton High School in 1937.

After graduating Aleda went on to the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for a short time. She then taught in both Chickasaw and Howard County area schools for over 30 years.

On Sept. 30, 1939, she was united in marriage to Albert Knutson at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Saude. After their marriage, the couple resided in Mason City for two years before moving back to the farm in the Howard and Chickasaw County area.

Aleda went on to further her education and graduated from Upper Iowa University in 1965 with a bachelor of arts degree in education. In 1996 the couple moved to New Hampton.

Aleda was a member of the Jerico Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid. She enjoyed gardening and traveling. She and her husband, Albert, spent many winters in Arizona and also took a trip to Norway.

Survivors include two sons, Gary and Rosemary Knutson of Decorah and Larry and Sara Knutson of Cedar Rapids; four granddaughters, Debra and Neil Johnson of Maquoketa, Kelly and Chad Dotsler of St. Joseph, Minn., Vickie McKenna of Canton, Minn., Laura and Randy Ellingson of Cresco; and three grandsons, Eric and Brenda Knutson of Caledonia, Minn, Todd K. and Elizabeth Knutson of Graham, Wash., and Timothy D. and Cindy Knutson of Wapello.

Also surviving are 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Hazel and Ed Mitchell of Pine, Ariz.; one brother-in-law, H. Duane Knutson of Jerico; and many nieces and nephews.

Aleda Knutson was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albert, who died March 27, 1999; two grandsons, Douglas A. Knutson, who died in December of 1961, and Lee A. Knutson, who died at age 27 in November of 1996; and one brother, James Hereid.
