Irene Strnad
Irene Strnad, 84, of Protivin, died at the Cresco Care Center Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 23, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Worship Center in Protivin, with the Rev. Allen Schmitt officiating.
Casket bearers were her nine grandchildren, Sally, Joe, Nancy and Thom Stnad; Jennifer, Paul and Sara Strnad; and Dean and Don Dietzenbach.
The Conway Funeral Home in Cresco handled arrangements.
Irene (Vsetecka) Strnad was born June 29, 1915, in Winneshiek County, southeast of Protivin, the daughter of Joseph F. and Elizabeth (Horky) Vsetecka.
She attended rural school and returned home to help the family with their chores each day.
On Nov. 15, 1937, she was united in marriage to Joseph G. Strnad at the Holy Trinity Church in Protivin. They made their home on the farm until they moved into Protivin in 1980.
Irene did many things in her lifetime -- she helped haul mail, she liked to cook at weddings, she did a lot of sewing and crocheting, and she had a wonderful garden and did a lot of canning.
Irene enjoyed flowers and trees. She never had trouble getting them to grow.
She was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Church and the Rosary Society.
Survivors include one daughter, Dona and Lyle Dietzenbach of Protivin; two sons, Arnold and Kate Strnad of Plymouth, Minn., and James and Liz Strnad of Stevens Point, Wis.; nine grandchildren; and one great grandchild, Hannah Marie Vogel.
Irene Strnad was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph, who died March 5, 1984; five brothers, Adolf, Leonard, Benjamin, Clarence and Edward; and four sisters, Helen Tupy, Edna Shores, Della Novak and Emma Kalishek.
