Mildred Viola Osmundson

Mildred Osmundson, 89, of West Union, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, following an illness and surgery at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, Wis.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m., at Bethany Lutheran Church, West Union, with the Rev. Richard Vettrus officiating.

Lori Osmundson was the organist. Vocalist was JeNel Allen-Barth, who sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Because He Lives". The congregation sang "What a Day That Will Be".

Casket bearers were Gaylord Osmundson, Roger Osmundson, Curtis Dummermuth, Duane Voshell, Carmen Oyloe and Jay Jensen.

Interment was at the Bethany Lutheran Cemetery. The Burnham-Wood Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Mildred Viola (Neumann) Osmundson, daughter of Edward and Mary (Leistikow) Neumann, was born June 1, 1910, at Hawkeye.

She was baptized at the Lutheran Church in Hawkeye in August of 1910, and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union in April of 1924.

Mildred graduated from West Union High School June 1, 1928. She obtained her teaching certificate and taught school for a few years.

On Jan. 19, 1933, Mildred was united to Thomas Osmundson at Zion Lutheran Church. To this union were born three children. They farmed for 10 years near West Union, then bought a farm near CASTALIA where they farmed for 24 years.

The couple retired to West Union in 1967. Mildred was a homemaker and helped Thomas on the farm.

She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and Bethany Sewing Circle.

Mildred had lived in her own home until 10 days ago, when she became ill and had surgery at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center. She entered the Aase Haugen Home Dec. 1.

Survivors include one son, Alan of Wichita, Kan.; one daughter, Ardys (Mrs. Milton) Barth of DECORAH; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Hazel Jensen and Ethel Voshell of West Union, and Irene Dummermuth of Fayette; and one brother, Robert Neumann of Ventura, Calif.

Mildred Osmundson was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas, who died in 1986; one son, Robert in 1969; and a granddaughter, Lori Ann Barth in 1963.
