Joyce A. Shaw, 75, of Garwin, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 22, at 10 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Garwin, with the Rev. Cindy Morrison officiating.

Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo, Iowa. The Overton Family Funeral Home in Garwin is handling arrangements.

Visitation will be held there Tuesday, Dec. 21, from 4-8 p.m.

Joyce (Moon) Shaw was born March 5, 1924, at Newton, the daughter of Harvey and Lillian (Due) Moon. She started school at Pleasant Plaine and later attended schools in Iowa Falls and Union, graduating from Hudson High School.

Joyce continued her education at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, where she received her teaching certificate and then taught country school near Dike.

Joyce again continued on with her education and later received her bachelor of arts degree and master's degree, both in education.

On June 2, 1943, she was united in marriage to Russell Shaw at the Hudson Community Church in Hudson. Joyce and Russell then made their home for a time in Grundy Center before moving to the Garwin community.

Joyce taught school in Garwin for a time and later in the Marshalltown School District, where she retired after 26 years of teaching.

In free moments, Joyce enjoyed needlepoint, crocheting, gardening, reading and crossword puzzles. She also, enjoyed traveling with her family.

She was a member of the Garwin United Methodist Church, where she sang in the church choir and had served as Sunday School superintendent and also taught.

Survivors include her husband, Russell; one son, Richard and Susan Shaw of CALMAR; two daughters, Rebecca Shaw of Dubuque, and Karen and Jim Sandquist of Garwin; one brother, Milton Moon of Silver Springs, Md.; 12 grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren.

Joyce Shaw was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Dr. Robert Shaw; one brother, Mrylen; and one grandson, Ted.
