Ida Barness

Ida Barness, 79, of West Union, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, following a long illness.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 21, at 10:30 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, rural West Union, with the Rev. Richard Vettrus officiating. Burial was at Bethany Lutheran Church Cemetery. Burnham and Wood Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ida was born near Ossian on July 2, 1920, the daughter of Laurie and Josephine (Walvatne) Osterhus. She attended #7 Country School.

On March 9, 1943, Ida married Ralph Barness. To this union five children were born: Beverly, Wayne, Jim, Jerry and Nancy. They farmed near OSSIAN until 1984, when they moved to West Union.

Ida was a church organist. She had served as Sunday school superintendent and was active in Mission Society.

She had been a nurse aide at the Good Samaritan Home and was assistant to the activity director.

Ida is survived by her husband, Ralph, of West Union; three sons, Wayne of West Union and James and Gerald, both of OSSIAN; and two daughters, Beverly Jackson of Waukesha, Wis. and Nancy Bowdish of Strawberry Point.

Other survivors are a sister, Louella Solheim of CASTALIA; 19 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Ida (Osterhus) Barness was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Richard and Clifford Osterhus; and one sister, Clarice Hilgerson.
