Elliot "Pete" Nuehring

Elliot "Pete" A. Nuehring, 87, of Decorah, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000 at the Aase Haugen Home following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 9, at 11 a.m., at the Decorah Lutheran Church, with the Revs. James Glesne and Ole Winter officiating.

Kathy Murray was the organist. Soloist Arlene Foltz sang "Just a Closer Walk with Thee." Congregational songs were "Lift High the Cross" and "Beautiful Savior."

Casket bearers were Harold Poppe, Steve Matter, Jason Nuehring, Jeff Lange, Fredrick Heins and Eugene Nuehring.

Burial was at the Postville Cemetery. The French & Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Elliott was born Aug. 6, 1913, in Grand Meadow Township of Clayton County, the son of Edward and Hulda (Busacker) Nuehring.

He attended the Larabie Country School and worked as a farmhand. In 1936 he moved to Elkader and worked for the Nu Icy Pop Factory. He married Dorothy Sander June 30, 1938 in State Center.

Pete then worked for Roy Dittmer Studebaker in Elkader. In 1947, he entered into a partnership at the N & S Mobil Station in Elkader until 1963.

In 1963 he moved to Decorah and operated the Mobil Station until he retired in 1978. After retirement, Pete was a substitute mechanic instructor at Northeast Iowa Community College, and was a substitute mechanic for UPS. He enjoyed fixing things and was handy working on air conditioning in cars.

Pete was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church, where he served on the Church Council and was an usher. He served on the Lutheran Cemetery Board and the Aase Haugen Nursing Home Board.

He also was a member of the Minowa Players. He was a former member of the Elks and Silvercrest Golf Course. While in Elkader, he was a charter member of Bethany Lutheran Church, the City Council, the fire department and the Rotary Club.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Decorah; one daughter, Shirley and Lowell Lange of Hampton; two sons, Dave and Nancy Nuehring of Rockford, Illinois, and Paul Nuehring of Decorah; three grandchildren, Jeff Lange, Jennifer Lange and Jason Nuehring; and three great-grandchildren, Samantha, Autumn and Curtis Nuehring.

Also surviving are three brothers, Elery Nuehring of Madison, Wis., Eldred and Darlene Nuehring of Postville, and Alden "Jim" and Dorothy Nuehring of Postville; two sisters, Ellen Thoma of Postville, and Eileen and Robert DeMarr of Lake Geneva, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.
