Eugene Earl Szabo
Eugene Earl Szabo, 80, Castalia, Iowa, died Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at Ossian Senior Hospice, Ossian, Iowa. Eugene was born on November 12, 1929, in Sumner, Iowa, to Steven and Laura (Reisner) Szabo. He graduated from Postville High School in 1947. He was enlisted in the United States Army on March 21, 1951, and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on March 24, 1953.
Eugene was united in marriage to Jean Gordon on February 25, 1955, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, Iowa. Two sons were born to this union. Eugene worked and managed Frudden Lumber in Castalia, Iowa, and Decorah, Iowa, for 42 years. He was a janitor at the Postville Schools for eight years and also farmed in rural Postville for thirteen years.
Eugene enjoyed traveling, gardening, mowing lawn and weaving rugs. He was an active member in the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, Iowa, serving on the church council as past president. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Szabo; two sons, Jeffery Szabo, Castalia, Gregory (Dawn) Szabo, Castalia; two grandchildren, Justin Szabo, Postville, Kelli Szabo, Ossian; three step-grandchildren, Kristi Brockway, Postville, Shannon Brockway, Postville, Kari (Brian) Bohr, Postville; two step-great-grandchildren, Riley Brockway, Koby Bohr; one sister, Dianne (Bill) Buddenberg, Castalia; four brothers, Robert Szabo, Castalia, Edward Szabo, Clermont, Victor Szabo, Castalia, Leon (Fayne) Szabo, Clarion and one brother-in-law, Duane Wander, Riverside, CA.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; six siblings, Theodore Szabo, William Szabo, Darlene Schultz, Dayle Szabo, Marilyn Wander and Agnes Smith.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, Iowa. The Rev. Dave Lenth will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Bloomfield Cemetery in Castalia, Iowa, with military rites.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 13, 2010, from 4-7 p.m. at the Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Postville, Iowa, and one hour before services at the church.
