Evelyn Bernatz

Evelyn B. Bernatz, 90, of Decorah, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at
the Aase Haugen Home.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m., at the Fjelstul Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ole Winter of Decorah Lutheran Church officiating.

Diane Kvamme was the organist. Congregational hymns were "Abide With Me," "You Are Mine" and "Be Not Afraid."

Casket bearers were Jeffrey Courtney, Jay Courtney, Joshua Courtney and Kent Eubank. Honorary bearers were Christopher Larson and Benjamin Larson.

Burial was at the North Washington Prairie Cemetery. The Fjelstul Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Evelyn (Berg) Bernatz was born April 7, 1910, in Decorah, the daughter of Albert and Clara (Krogsund) Berg. She attended Decorah High School.

She was married Jan. 1, 1934, to Arthur Bernatz in Decorah.

Evelyn lived in Ossian and worked for Sampson Dry Cleaners and moved to Decorah in 1967. Then she worked as a desk clerk at the Hotel Winneshiek and hostess at Mabe's Pizza.

Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Courtney of Decorah; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and one sister-in-law, Olga Berg of Decorah.

Evelyn Bernatz was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur, who died June 17, 1947; three sisters, Mabel Grandstaff, Grace Hobron and Esther Ihle; and three brothers, Arnold Berg, Clarence Wessly and Charles Berg.
