John Moen

John Moen, 80, formerly of West Union, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union after a long illness.

A double funeral service for John Moen and his brother-in-law, Dean Pape, was held Friday, August 27, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado, la., with the Rev. David R. Nelson officiating.

Pallbearers were Russ Granneman, Mike Ruroden, Jim Darnell, Daryl Daker, Michael Johnson and Jim Chamberlain.

Interment was in the St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery. Burnham-Wood Funeral Home handled arrangements.

John Moen was born Feb. 19, 1919, in his family home on a farm in Winneshiek County in the Ossian area, the son of Henry and Julia (Hagelie) Moen. He was baptized at confirmed at First Lutheran Church in rural Ossian.

On Oct. 8, 1947, he married Irene Pape at St. Peter Lutheran Church in rural Ossian, To this union two children were born: Jerry and Marlene.

John served in the U.S. Army. He worked as an auto mechanic for Wilbur Ford Co. in West Union. The family moved to Cedar Rapids in 1969. John retired in 1982.

John and Irene came to West Union three weeks, ago to care for Irene's brother Dean Pape, who was battling cancer.

John enjoyed reading the Bible, being with his children and grandchildren and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Irene; one son, Jerry and Dawn Moen of Stewartville, Minn.; one daughter, Marlene and Tom Wilber of Center Point; one brother, H. J. Moen of West Union; one sister, Laurinda Johnson of West Union; and six grandchildren, Michelle Martin, Dawn Wilber,; Chad Wilber, Sean Moen, Allison Moen, and John Moen; and two greatgrandchildren, Nina and Raven Martin.
