Sigurd 'Sig' Stavnes

Sigurd "Sig" Stavnes, 76, of Timber Lake, S.D., died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at the Beverly Healthcare Center in Mobridge, S.D.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Oct. 23, at 10:30 a.m., in Holy Cross Catholic Church in Timber Lake, S.D. The Rev. Peter Kavorik officiated.

Casket bearers were Jeff Stavnes, John Stavnes, Frank Quinn, Eddie Kraft, Jack Hagen and Walter Brockamp.

Burial was in the Timber Lake Cemetery with the Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge, S.D., in charge of arrangements.

Sigurd Peter Stavnes was born June 25, 1923, to Ole and Helga (Pettersen) Stavnes in Castalia. This is where he grew up and attended school. He then worked on the family farm.

On Jan. 28, 1946, he married Aileen Brockamp in Ossian. In August of 1946, they moved to Timber Lake, S.D., where Sig worked construction
as a heavy equipment operator.

During his life, he helped build nuclear missile sites in North Dakota and South Dakota, the Oahe Dam, worked on road construction, stock dams, the Timber Lake Airport, the Faith Airport, the Timber Lake football field, the Indian Memorial Campground near Mobridge, S.D., and the coal gasification plant in Beulah, N.D.

Sig also helped Alf Biegler with farming and ranching in the Timber Lake area, where he had resided.

Survivors include his wife, Aileen of Timber Lake, S.D.; four sons, Joe and Judy Stavnes of Torrington, Wyo., Guy and Diane Stavnes of Helena, Mont., Mark Stavnes of Douglas, Wyo., and George and Heidi Stavnes of Clayton, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Sigurd Stavnes was preceded in death by his parents, one infant daughter, two brothers, two sisters, and two grandchildren.
