Anna Schmitt

Anna Johanna Schmitt, 91, of New Hampton and St. Lucas, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at the New Hampton Care Center after an extended illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Nov. 15, at 11 a.m., at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas, with the Rev. Carl Schmitt celebrating the mass.

Music was provided by Kathy Meyer as organist. The pall was placed on the casket by her daughters.

Lectors were Barbara Schutz and Judy Kleve. The gifts were presented by Raymond Schmitt and Elaine Kleve.

Casket bearers were Lee Meyer, Jeffrey Schmitt, Ken Schmitt, Jim Massman, Galen Heying and Allan Kleve. Honorary bearers were members of the Waucoma Catholic Daughters of America.

Interment was at St. Luke's Catholic Cemetery, St. Lucas. The Larkin-Martin-Hugeback Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Anna (Blong) Schmitt was born Dec. 12, 1907, near St. Lucas, the daughter of Matthew and Philomena (Bodensteiner) Blong. She attended St. Luke's School.

On Feb. 9, 1926, at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas, she was married to Joseph J. Schmitt in a double-ring ceremony. They and their family farmed, did carpentry work and contract farming in the St. Lucas area.

Memberships included St. Luke's Catholic Church, the Waucoma Catholic Daughters of America and a 45-year membership in the American Legion Auxiliary.

Anna's hands were always busy in work. She especially enjoyed knitting and crocheting, as well as fishing, working in the garden with her flowers, rock polishing and a variety of crafts.

Anna made her home the last seven years at the New Hampton Care Center.

Survivors include four daughters, Agnes and Cletus Meyer of St. Lucas, Verna and Albin Massman of Lansing, Emily and Cleo Heying of Postville, and Elaine and Roger Kleve of Cresco; six sons, Tony Schmitt of Dickeyville, Wis., Henry Schmitt of Hawkeye, the Rev. Carl Schmitt of St. Joseph Parish in New Hampton, Clem Schmitt of Hawkeye, Floyd and Debbie Schmitt of Castalia, and Raymond and Nancy Schmitt of North Las Vegas, Nev.; one sister, Loretta Blong of St. Lucas; one brother, Alexian Brother Wendelin Blong of Chicago; 56 grandchildren; and 99 great-grandchildren.

Anna Schmitt was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph, who died June 15, 1961; one daughter, Marie, who died June 21, 1994; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
