Ruth Mary Esther Allert

Ruth Mary Esther Allert, 97, died Nov. 7. 2000 of heart failure at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn and Allan Bentley, of Ames, Iowa.

Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 17 at the Schultz Funeral Home in Monona from 3-7 p.m. Funeral services will be Saturday, Nov. 18 at the Giard United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Giard cemetery.

Ruth Allert was born June 17, 1903, the first daughter of Henry and Mary Voegeding of DECORAH. She began her education in country schools and graduated from DECORAH High School.

On August 25, 1925, Ruth was united in marriage with Herman H. Allert of McGregor. They lived their entire married years in Giard, where Ruth was active in the community and in the church.

In addition to singing soprano in the Giard church choir, Ruth performed many solos and duets with her sister Mae. Ruth taught Sunday School for many years, was a UMW officer, and chaired many church suppers. One of her favorite activities was singing in the Clayton County Farm Bureau women's Chorus. She was active in Farm Bureau locally and was chairman of the county 4-H girls committee for several years.

Among Ruth's variety of interests were: reading, gardening, cooking, baking, crocheting, poetry, writing, astronomy and genealogy. Her collections included spoons, salt and pepper shakers, buttons, bells, jokes, and recipes.

Ruth loved children and they were drawn to her. She delighted in telling and reading stories, teaching nursery rhymes and songs, and playing games. Her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren were the joy of her life, and she was honored to be called "grandma Ruth" by many more children whose lives she touched. She was known as "Auntie Ruth" to her special nieces, nephews, and their children.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Evelyn and Allan, of Ames; her six grandchildren: Denny Bentley and Julie of Ames; Becky Christiansen and Kim of Ames; Jane Weaver and Jim of Littleton, Colo.; Carol Owen and Bob of Moab, Utah; Mary Wills and Maury of Adel; and Scott Bentley of Sacramento, Calif.

Ruth's nine greatgrandchildren are: Matt, Liesel and Alex Christiansen; John, Anna, Daniel, Laura, and Peter Wills and Paul Weaver She is also survived by her sisters, Mae Witter of McGregor and Hulda Wicks of DECORAH, and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her brother, Harold, in 1934, and her husband, Herman, in 1980.
