Eugene Carolan

Eugene "Gene" M. Carolan, 70, of Decorah and formerly of Lawler, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at the Green Lea Manor in Mabel, Minn., after a long illness with progressive Supranuclear Palsy.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m., at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, with the Revs. Gary Krapfl and J. David Pepper officiating.

Alan Sensor will be the organist. Soloist Laurie Carolan will sing "You Are Mine." Soloist John Loftus will sing "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling."
Joan Schissel will be the cantor. The congregation will sing "On Eagle's Wings" and "How Great Thou Art."

Casket bearers will be grandchildren Brian, Cathy, Christopher, David, Michael and Quincy Carolan. Honorary bearers will be his other 11 grandchildren.

Burial will be at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery in Lawler. The Fjelstul Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Eugene was born Sept. 6, 1929, at New Hampton, the son of Frank and Alice (Whalen) Carolan. He attended Lawler High School.

On April 14, 1951, Gene was married to Margaret Schupanitz at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina.

Gene farmed for many years south of Lawler and he was involved in a logging business. The couple retired and moved to Decorah three years ago.

A lifelong member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, Gene also enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; seven sons, Tom and Eileen Carolan of Waucoma, Jerry and Gail Carolan of Waucoma, Steven and Sherri Carolan of Decorah, Daniel and Laurie Carolan of Lawler, Ron and Tammy Carolan of Fredericksburg, Terry Carolan of Omaha, Neb., and Mark and Leann Carolan of West Des Moines; his step-mother, Lucile Carolan of Waterloo; 17 grandchildren; three brothers, James and Shirley Carolan of Lawler, Francis and Madonna Carolan of Charles City, and Paul and Diana Carolan of Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Ann Ellingson and Bernadette Nosbisch, both of Cresco; and one sister-in-law, Kay Carolan of Savage, Minn.

Gene Carolan was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers who died in infancy; and two other brother, Charles and Robert.
