Evelyn Staska

Evelyn Staska, 80, of Ossian, died Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, at her home of a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m., at the Ossian Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Barbara Wangsness-Lizarazo officiating.

Elaine Knutson was the organist. The Silver Memories, accompanied by Irmgard Ellingson, sang "Old Rugged Cross" and "Rock of Ages." The congregation sang "Beautiful Savior" and "How Great Thou Art."

Casket bearers were Donald Schrandt, David Torkelson, Jim Lenth, Jerry Schrandt, Allen Chensvold and Bernell Chensvold.

Interment was at the Hillside Cemetery, Ossian. The Schmitz Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Evelyn Marie (Torkelson) Staska was born Sept. 23, 1919, in rural Ossian, in Dover Township of Fayette County, the daughter of Alfred and Minnie (Schweinefus) Torkelson.

She was baptized and confirmed at Stavanger Lutheran Church, rural Ossian.

She received her education by attending Dover Township No. 7 Country School in Fayette County.

On April 25, 1945, she was united in marriage to Victor J. (Bud) Staska at Red Wing, Minn. They made their home in Ossian following marriage and raised their family of three children.

Evelyn was a homemaker. She was a member of the Ossian Lutheran Church, and a past president and circle lead of the E.L.C.W. She enjoyed needlework, embroidery, baking, gardening, family and grandchildren.

Prior to her marriage, Evelyn was employed as a housekeeper at the Fred J. Figge residence and later at the Schmitz Furniture Factory, both in Ossian.

Survivors include one son, John and Peggy Staska of Iowa City; two daughters, Jean and Jerry Erickson of West Union, and Judy Dunn and her fiance Bruce Trapp of Manchester; four grandchildren: Robert and Gina Erickson of Vancouver, Wash., Richard and Shanda Erickson of Spillville, Tirzah and Ron Wedewer of Dyersville, and Nathaniel Dunn of Sanford, Fla.; three great grandchildren, Alex Erickson and Shaunna Erickson, both of Spillville, and Seth Wedewer of Dyersville; three sisters, Inez and Edwin Chensvold of West Union, Florence Schrandt of Ossian, and Irene and Robert Klisart of Ossian; and several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn Staska was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Victor, who died Sept. 9, 1996; one sister, Marjorie Lenth in 1993; and two brothers, Walter Torkelson in 1991 and Arthur Torkelson in 1982.
