Charles Shores

Charles Shores, 96, of Protivin, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at the Cresco Care Center following a short illness.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, Aug. 9, at 11 a.m., at the First Congregational Church in Cresco, with the Rev. Tim Sir officiating.

Music was by Nancy Spalla and Barb Larsen.

The Protivin American Legion Post No. 605 was in honorary attendance.

Interment was at the Bohemian National Cemetery, rural Protivin.

The Balik Funeral Home of SPILLVILLE handled arrangements.

Charles donated his body to the University of Iowa for medical research.

Charles Louis Shores was born May 1, 1904, near Protivin, the son of Louis and Mary (Chyle) Shores. He attended country school near Protivin. He played his guitar for 4-H and school programs.

Charles was inducted into the United States Army at Camp Dodge Aug. 21, 1942. Following basic training as an airplane and engine mechanic he was assigned to the 405th Fighter Squadron of the 792 Air Force.

Charles left for service in the European Theater of Operations Feb. 28, 1944. He served with the 405th Fighter Squadron through the following campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe and Air Force Offensive Europe.

He was awarded the following medals and Campaign ribbons: Good Conduct Medal, District Unit Badge, G.O./95 9th Air Force, 1945 Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European, African, Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, with one Silver and one Bronze Battle Star, three Overseas Service Bars and one Service Stripe.

Attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant, Charles departed for the United States Oct. 29, 1945, arriving Nov. 7, 1945.

He received his honorable discharge at the Separation Center, Fort Sheridan, IL, Nov. 12, 1945.

Following his discharge, Charles returned to the Protivin community, where he was engaged as a self-employed carpenter until his retirement.

Charles joined the American Legion Post No. 605, Protivin, on April 3, 1946, and continued that membership until his death. He served in various capacities, including a long period as Chaplain of Post No. 605.

Survivors include three brothers, Milo Shores of FORT ATKINSON, and Louis and Walter Shores of Protivin, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Charles Shores was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Mary Shores, Ella Kinkor and Lillian Whitney.
